Holy Saturday
Silent Saturday
This is the day Jesus rests in his tomb and descends into the underworld, called 'The Harrowing of Hell. Meanwhile his disciples are awaiting Jesus’ return.
Pieter van der Heyden (circa 1561) |
For many Christians, this day is just for meditation and reflection on Jesus' sacrifice, as well as sympathy for Saint Mary for the death of her son, ‘Our Lady of Solitude.’
Easter Vigil
The Catholic practice on this day is to have the Easter Vigil service.
After nightfall, the Easter vigil starts and ends by the dawn of Easter Sunday. The Paschal candles are lit, from darkness to lightness, symbolising Jesus coming back to life.
“Light of Christ”
“Thanks be to God.”
Scriptures are read from the old and new testaments. ‘Alleluia’ is sung, which is its first utterance since before the start of Lent.
Baptisms are performed or a renewal of baptismal vows and then the Eucharist, their first one for the newly baptized.
